mary ann brooks is a movement based performance artist. she has performed and taught in new york city, amsterdam, san francisco and new zealand. she has collaborated with actors, dancers, musicians, film makers and circus artists. her solo performances draw on personal narrative, image, ritual, found text, movement and gesture. she grew up singing gospel music in the african american tradition and playing classical flute. She was first introduced to dance after studying with renowned anthropologist and dancer, Pearl Primus.
