Davıd’s Plates
heraklius compared his success to the battle when David defeated the mighty Goliath, and ir is understood today that he had a series of plates known as ‘David’s Plates’ cast from silver. The said plates were found over two stages near Lambousa in 1900 and over a period of time were distributed to museums in Lefko?a, New York, Washington and London. Once the ships of Arab pirates were sighted on the horizon, it is believed that the silverware was hastily buried in the ground. David and Goliath are depicted in the centre on the widest of these plates, which are among the most outstanding examples of early Byzantine art. Because most of them carried the imperial mark, they were easily identified as to being made between 627 and 630.A large part of the two hoards of treasure found here in 1902 were smuggled abroad and sold to the New York Metropolitan Museum. In 1905, Lambousa was declared an antiquities site. On behalf of the Cyprus museum John L Myres descended 40 feet down from Acropolis Hill and realized his studies in 1913. since then and up until 1991, no other work has taken place at Lambousa.
Northern Cyprus Hotels In order to convert the tomb area in the east of the city into an open air museum suitable for visitors, some of the graves here were cleaned and exposed by a German group who worked in cooperation with the Antiquities and Museums Department between 1991 and 1994. currently the structures that can be seen at Lambousa include the Monastery (6-16 th Century AD). Saint Evlalios Church (6th Century AD), the King’s Pool, City Walls and Tomb Chambers engraved out of the stone.
